What the H*ll is This?

So, the allergy testing results are in.  The princess is apparently allergic to every type of mite (dust, storage, etc) as well as flies (deer, stable, horse) and both American and German cockroaches, not to mention mildly allergic to soy and flax. The latter is going to require some adjustment in feed.  But really, how is that different from Iowa???  Something triggered her immune system.  Well, there is one more thing…. She is allergic to acacia trees.  Florida has lots of acacia trees.  Guess what lines the back of Laura’s property by the canal?  Not one, but many earleaf acacia trees. Pics left.  Lots of pretty yellow flowers that then morph into these (ugly?) ear-shaped seed pods.  I think we have the culprit.  Now we start the hyposensitization protocol giving an escalating series of allergen shots over the next 6 months.  ‘Cause, you know, I might just want to come back next year….

On to the hay steamer.  Commer-cially, the HayGain steamer retails for over $3,000.  It is really well-made and does a fabulous job. But, not an option here. So, I set about making one myself and I have to say I am pretty pleased with the result.  The copper tubing has holes along its side and the six tubes route steam both inside and outside the bale. It gets the hay up to 150 degrees and keeps it there, which is sufficient.  If I got fancy and tried to add insulation, etc. it might reach a higher temperature. I will be leaving it with Laura when I return in April.  Making it was straightforward and I’d be happy to assist anyone who wants one of their own.

Lastly, I present a picture of Galatea.  Why is this notable?  Because a month ago it was impossible to turn her out in the paddock without her pacing the fence line, refusing to go to the back part, and totally freaking out if she caught sight of the two amigos in the paddock next door. A 1300 lb horse running around like a maniac in a small space is dangerous for both horse and the person trying to catch them.  She was so agitated in turn out on day 2 of her arrival that she ran over Laura when they tried to catch her. She is acting much more like herself these days, including buddying up with the neighboring horses. I am hopeful it translates to under saddle - and she can redeem herself with Laura in the time remaining.

So, it has been interesting around here and not necessarily in a good way.  Will get to that in a bit.  The weather has been great and...
